Year of Travel 2001

In 2001 I set out on the adventure of a young lifetime - travelling over 70,000km in 318 days, from Cape Town in South Africa to Vancouver in Canada, taking in East and South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand, and North America en route.

I'll be publishing monthly updates here throughout 2025 as we approach February 2026, the 25th anniversary of that adventure.

June 2001

Your author escapes to the beautiful Gili Islands for some relaxation and adventures, then heads to Melbourne where the search for gainful employment is hilariously unsuccessful. Between job hunting and enjoying the city, there's a lot of eating, drinking, and questionable decisions.

May 2001

May 2001 starts with a boozy farewell to Hong Kong, and wends its way to Lombok via museum-hops in Shanghai, knife-waving political protests in Java and a stolen Walkman in Bali...

April 2001

Month three of my odyssey had me pootling around Malaysia (memorable highlights: the rains in Kuala Lumpur, a night safari gone wrong, and romantic Kellie's Castle) before an epic train journey back to Thailand and then on to Hongkers.

March 2001

In March, I voyaged from South Africa to South East Asia. I stayed with family, played at being rich in Singapore, hooked up with some honeymooners in Thailand (not how it sounds!), and island-hopped in the Andaman.

February 2001

In February, my travels took me to South Africa: from Cape Town up the coast to Coffee Bay and taking in amazing views, baking sun, a mugging, too many hangovers, and family visits along the way.

My editing setup

In 2002 - the year after I returned from my travels - Apple launched the iMac G4. I always wanted one, but at £1,600+ there was no way I could afford it.

Fast forward to 2025, and I've bought one off Ebay for £95...it's fully functional, so I'm using it to write up my 2001 diary. Period perfect!
